Paint pens on fabric

Pigment paint pens draw crisp, opaque designs on T-shirts, tote bags and canvas sneakers. Whether the design survives the wash comes down to prep and heat-setting.

Short answer

Prewash the fabric with no softener, slip card inside, and draw with a medium pigment paint pen. Let it dry fully (craft guides commonly say 24 hours), then heat-set: Posca says to iron inside out with no steam. Wash inside out on a low-temperature cycle. For clothes you wash constantly, a dedicated fabric marker stays softer.

How to use paint pens on fabric

  1. Prewash without softener

Wash and dry the item first to remove sizing, and skip fabric softener, which coats fibers and stops paint gripping.

  2. Iron flat and add a board

Iron out wrinkles, then slide card or a cutting board inside so paint cannot bleed through to the back.

  3. Sketch lightly

Use tailor’s chalk or a fabric pencil. Pen lines on fabric are permanent once dry, so plan first.

  4. Prime and draw

Shake the pen with the cap on and prime it on scrap until paint flows. Draw with steady, light strokes, holding the fabric taut with your other hand. Go back over areas for opacity instead of pressing hard.

  5. Let it dry fully

Craft guides commonly suggest leaving the design 24 hours before heat-setting. Thick or layered areas need the longest.

  6. Heat-set with an iron

Posca says to iron inside out with no steam. For fabric paints, Dharma Trading recommends the hottest setting the fabric allows and a press cloth if ironing the painted side. Keep the iron moving so nothing scorches.

  7. Wash gently

Wash inside out at a low temperature, as Posca recommends, and air dry or tumble on low. Skip bleach.

Canvas sneakers and leather

Canvas sneakers take paint pens like any tight cotton weave. The catch is heat-setting: an iron cannot reach most of a shoe, so durability varies a lot. Keep designs away from the toe flex line, layer thinly, and consider a clear fabric or shoe sealer, testing it first on a hidden spot.

Leather is different. Smooth leather has a finish that paint struggles to grip and it flexes constantly, so designs can crack or peel. Paint made for leather, with the prep its maker specifies, is the safer route. We do not have evidence that standard acrylic paint pens last on leather.

Troubleshooting

Questions people ask

Do paint pens wash out of clothes?

A pigment paint pen that has been heat-set holds up to gentle washing, though it can fade or crack over many washes. Without heat-setting, expect it to wash out or flake. Wash inside out on a low-temperature cycle.

Do I have to heat-set paint pens on fabric?

For anything you will wash, yes. Posca says to fix designs by ironing inside out without steam. Follow the instructions for the pen you use, since times and temperatures vary by maker and fabric.

Will paint pens show on dark fabric?

Opaque pigment pens do, but white and light colors need two layers with drying in between. Do the heat-setting once, after the final layer.

Can I use paint pens on canvas shoes?

Canvas sneakers are a tight cotton weave, so paint pens draw well on them. They are hard to iron, so results vary. Test a hidden spot, keep designs on areas that flex less, and consider a clear sealer made for fabric or shoes.

Does acrylic paint make fabric stiff?

Somewhat. Heavy coverage dries as a layer on the fibers. Line work and smaller designs stay softer; for large filled areas, fabric markers or fabric paint feel better.
